Chapter 6
Colt didnât return to the inn until after the group had enjoyed Georgiaâs dinner the previous evening. Unfortunately, the leads heâd been chasing had fizzled out once he tracked down the source of the information heâd received. I supposed that was the way investigations went at times. There were spurts of activity created by a tip, which may or may not pan out, and then once the tip ended up fizzling out, things cooled down, and once again, you found yourself dealing with an investigation that had gone stagnant. There had been a discussion with the coroner as to whether or not Mayor Wallaceâs body would be released for cremation. Despite the fact that the source of the poison, which was believed to have led to the heart attack, hadnât been isolated, the coroner felt there was little more he could learn from the remains. After a bit of back and forth, the mortician received the okay to prepare the body for cremation.
I shared with Colt what Vanessa had shared with me about the food vendors in the park on the day the mayor had died. Colt didnât necessarily think anything would come of it, but he still assured me that heâd track everyone down and interview each vendor on the list. The reality was that we didnât even know with any degree of certainty that the poison was part of a targeted attack meant to make the mayor ill for some reason, or if the person who slipped him the substance knew he had a weak heart and hoped a mild dose would likely kill him. Of course, if the mayor had come across the tainted food randomly, and the food in which it was delivered was selected arbitrarily, or if the food became tainted accidentally, then no malicious action had actually taken place, and that would leave Colt with a whole new set of issues to look into.
Colt shared with me that he had a low level of confidence that heâd figure this one out. The mayor had ingested a lot of different things on the day he died, especially if the liquids he consumed were considered. Since the mayor had been a popular man, there werenât any obvious reasons for anyone to want to harm him, so in a way, an accidental poisoning seemed likely.
Still, despite the obstacles, Colt planned to give it his all and had left early this morning with a promise to call me later to let me know whether heâd make it back at the end of the day.
âIt looks like a full house for breakfast,â I said to Georgia after joining her in the innâs kitchen.
âEveryone is here. All the guests, at least. Jeremy and Annabelle are on their way to New York to meet up with the assistant who will accompany her on her trip to Spain. He wonât be back until Wednesday. And Mylie went into town to meet with the town council about an ad campaign sheâs been working on.
